5 Ways to Use Coconut Oil in Your Self-Care Routine

Tap Tap Organics is the only skincare brand to use wild-harvested, virgin coconut oil from Costa Rica in our products. And for a variety of good reasons! Learn why coconut oil is one of our signature ingredients and the 5 ways to use coconut oil in your self-care routine.

1| Skin Benefits

5 Ways to Use Coconut Oil in Your Self-Care Routine. Tap Tap Organics

All over the world people have used virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer for centuries. Moisturizers work by hydrating the skin, and coconut oil does so by creating a barrier that helps to retain moisture. It is also an emollient that can soothe and heal dry skin and eczema. For people with oily or acne-prone skin with concerns about coconut oil clogging their pores, the key is to use it moderately (a little bit goes a long way) and to use very high quality coconut oil.

As an alternative to applying pure coconut oil to your skin, you may want to try our whipped moisturizer Head to Toe Beauty Butter which has a combination of both certified organic coconut oil and Costa Rica, wild-harvested coconut oil. We combined these ingredients with certified organic shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado oil and jojoba oil.

Which Coconut Oil should I use?

When looking for coconut oil for your skin, look for cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil because it’s all natural and it does not contain any harsh chemicals. Virgin coconut oil has more antioxidants that fight inflammation and free radicals than refined coconut oil. Also opt for wild-harvested coconut oil, like the one we use in our products, or organic coconut oil. It’s not only better for the health of your skin but also for our environment.

2| Coconut Oil As Makeup Remover

In addition to the skin moisturizing benefits of coconut oil mentioned above, coconut oil is one of the most effective, natural natural makeup removers!

Simply allow about a teaspoon of coconut oil to melt on your fingertips and gently rub onto your eye area and skin. Once your makeup has melted away, wipe off with a cotton round and follow-up with your regular face wash. The results will surprise you! Even the most stubborn, waterproof mascara can be easily removed with coconut oil.

We also highly recommend using our Head To Toe Beauty Butter as makeup remover, especially the mini size which is great for travel. Just be sure to use the natural, unscented version especially if you’re using it near your eyes.

3| Coconut Oil Uses for Hair

Studies show that coconut oil can strengthen and protect hair from damage. It acts as a lubricant, protecting hair during combing and preventing protein loss. One study found that people who used coconut oil had stronger hair that was less damaged by shampooing, combing, and UV exposure.

To use as a conditioning hair mask, melt about ¼ cup of coconut oil and comb it through your hair. Be sure the oil is no longer hot, but still melted and in liquid form. Leave the coconut oil in your hair for about 15 minutes before you continue with your regular shampoo and conditioner. Of course, another option is to follow these same steps with our Head to Toe Beauty Butter

If you are looking for a more natural way to fight dandruff, coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that can help reduce levels of yeast on your scalp that can lead to dandruff. After washing your hair and towel drying, gently massage a small, pea-sized amount of coconut oil into your scalp. Then air-dry or blow dry your hair as usual.

And don’t forget to use a little bit more coconut oil or our beauty butter as a hair styling product to define curls and control your frizz!

4| Coconut Oil for Lash Health

While there are no studies linking coconut oil with eyelash growth directly, since healthy hair tends to grow faster than damaged hair, coconut oil may promote eyelash growth by keeping lashes healthy and strong.

Brush a tiny amount of coconut oil on your eyelashes and gently massage for 2 to 5 minutes. You can either rinse it off or leave a little bit on your eyelashes. This is an inexpensive and natural way to make them look longer and fuller. Make sure to use  unrefined, high quality coconut oil.

5| Oil Pulling & Oral Health

The practice of oil pulling with coconut oil started in India thousands of years ago. Oil pulling is basically using coconut oil as mouthwash. Studies have shown that coconut oil can kill harmful mouth bacteria that can cause bad breath, it can reduce plaque and gum disease and it can prevent tooth decay.

Apply a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth, swish the oil around for 5 minutes before spitting it out. It might take some getting used to but, combined with regular brushing and flossing, what a great, natural way to keep your teeth clean!
